JES2 Operators Course

Duration:          5 Days (duration may vary depending on the topics covered)

Description:    This course introduces the student to the commonly used I/O devices and data storage techniques of a computer system. It examines the basic workings of an MVS, OS/390 or z/OS/JES2 system and looks in detail at the commands commonly used by operators and explains their uses. The different types of dataset management are explained as is the concepts of VTAM and SNA protocols. A basic introduction to JCL and SDSF are also covered. The course also looks at some of the methods and tools used in first level problem determination in an MVS, OS/390 or z/OS environment. The principles of System management controls (SMC) and their uses in a computer installation are also explained.

Upon completion, a student should be able to:

  • Identify the workings of I/O devices and the CPU, and how devices are connected to the mainframe.

  • Recognise the basic workings of an MVS (OS/390 or z/OS) system and be able to perform the simpler operating duties.

  • Look up messages in the operations messages manual.

  • Identify the basic methods of dataset organisation.

  • Identify and be able read simple JCL.

  • Look up and find the causes of basic JCL errors

  • Recognize the concepts of VTAM and Systems Network Architecture.

  • Logon to TSO and perform simple ISPF functions such as creating, editing and browsing datasets.

  • Perform basic operating tasks using SDSF.

  • List various recovery procedures invoked by MVS (OS/390 or z/OS).

  • List some of the basic abend types likely to be encountered an be able to look up the relevant message codes.

  • Recognize the different types of Interrupts in an MVS, OS/390 or z/OS system.

  • List different types of waits and loops.

  • Recognize problems facing an operator in the event of a system failure and the options and tools available for problem determination.

  • List 8 disciplines of SMC and why they are required in a computer installation.

Audience:        Operators and trainee operators with 3-18 months experience operating in an MVS, OS/390 or z/OS/JES2 environment.

Prerequisites:   A basic understanding of the MVS, OS/390 or z/OS/JES2 environment and how to operate it would be useful but not essential.
